I'm one of those nuts who thinks that learning any knowledge in any field will augment your ability to learn stuff in other fields. And I'm also a firm "believer" of making the stuff you want to learn part of your every day life will make it easier. Necessity, the lack of options and the lack of choice make things easier. After all humans are made to adapt (to avoid death), so making something "necessary" in your daily life, the brain will adapt to it. And the brain will make the task less energy consuming, it'll try to make the task more efficient which manifests as "skill" i.e. if you have ever heard someone say "he/she makes it look so easy.." that's due to learned efficiency.
Long story short: I'm teaching my brain to adapt to adapting more efficiently.
So changing, and learning to recognize new patters in sensory input (visual, auditory, tactile) will teach me to be a better learner. Learning, understanding, intelligence and knowledge are essentially about pattern recognition. Or at least that's how I go about it.
Also learning braille gives a glimpse into the lives of visually impaired.
