Why do people have to die?
Because life is movement and conversion of energy*, nothing stays the same. If something was to stay still it would need energy to do so, thus if something was eternal it would consume everything else to justify its existence.
*(If it doesn't move/grow/change it is perceived as dead. also heat is movement, coldness is the lack of movement, this is why carcasses and rocks are cold: they are dead; not moving.)
But life does consume energy, it's called "food".

No, it just changes form. The 1st law of thermodynamics.
Consumed food becomes more or less "you". To keep "you" from dying, you must eat. But even you die eventually, thus returning your energy to the circulation, but if you didn't die, you'd eventually eat everything else
-------------------------------
The purpose of animals is to process energy to produce another form of energy. The excrement of an animal is food for plants, the plant uses that to create food for something else, and that something else produces energy in some other form to continue the cycle.function Animal(food) {excrement = food - (vitalFunctions + otherStuff);return excrement;}
For another example, let's think of a match. If you strike a match, it starts to burn away. But that "burning away" is just the match releasing its energy in the form of light, heat, carbon monoxide and other gases. Imagine that the surrounding reality is squeezing that energy into the form of a match, and by striking that match the vibrational frequency gets so intense that it vibrates through the forces squeezing it to form a solid object, that intense vibration is perceived as light and "hot". The match just radiates everywhere when it "burns."
The surrounding reality cannot shackle that energy into the form of a match when it "burns", that energy just vibrates through those shackles. So sure, that match doesn't exist anymore, but the energy used to form that said match hasn't gone anywhere.
PS. Do not go setting stuff on fire in order to "Free them from their imprisonment"
