Pain is a signal that let's you know you are doing something to damage your body and it's telling you should stop doing whatever you are doing so you don't damage it anymore severely by continuing the action. Lobsters and prawns not having this function would be very counter-intuitive to its survival: avoiding danger and injury is essential for surviving; anything damaging to your being is partly negating your existence.
So I think to avoid death you are required to feel pain in some form. Since we are all individual entities, trying to stay in existence with other individual entities, pain is necessary for the continuation of any singular entity. So if something avoids danger, it feels pain since it tries to avoid the thing that may cause damage; the thing that tries to negate its existence. If it doesn't - it dies, thus to survive you must know pain, to feel pain is to be alive; if it lives, it feels pain.
Pain is message you receive when you encounter something that is "Anti-you", something detrimental to your being, something that grounds and drains your potential, something that threatens your existence, something that doesn't add to you, but rather the opposite, devolves you rather than evolves you. It's the opposite signal of gain, which is loss.
