On insults, offenses and opinions

There's a saying: "Offense is never given, it is always taken."

Why would someone get insulted by something someone said?

If whatever is being said isn't true then why would you care? Why would you get offended by that, the person saying that clearly doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

If whatever is being said is true, then there's no point getting offended, since it changes nothing; it's still true.

Is it the fact that he/she dares to talk to you like that? Is because the intent behind it and not the actual words; it bothers you that he/she is trying to hurt you?

Well, then I ask you: did he/she succeed?
